Winter's Effect on Laser Printing
You wouldn't think that the weather could affect your print quality but it
does. In the winter, indoor air is dryer because the heating system is used.
You don't use your humidifier in the summer do you? Well, many indoor environments
are a little too dry for your laser printer. The static electricity you feel
as you walk across carpet or rub plastic (remember rubbing balloons on your
head as a kid?) can be generated inside your machine as parts turn in bushings.
The uneven buildup of static charges inside your printer affects its printing.
You might see a random vertical streak on you print out almost like someone
painted it on. It varies in width. It may not be the entire length of the
page. It is always in the axis of the paper path (which is usually fom the
top to the bottom of a letter sheet of paper).
Here's what you can do. Humidify - moisture is our friend. It reduces static
electricity. This can be expensive though. You can use room humidifiers just
be sure you don not direct the mist toward your electronic equipment including
your computer or printer. The other thing you can do is reduce your intensity
setting. This used to be a slid bar or dial insidee your laser printer but
now may be accesible through the control panel. Reducing the intensity reduces
one of the static charges generated by the printer as it moves the toner
from the cartridge onto the paper. If you have questions, fill in our special
request form and we'll be glad to answer them.
Ink Jet Problems?
Ink jet technology in its simplest form is squirting wet ink onto paper. The
technology uses microscopic sized nozzles and small heaters to heat the ink
and make it pop out of the nozzle onto the paper, kind of like the bubbles
made when you boil water. The print head nozzles carefully aim the ink to
the right place on the paper. PTS sells OEM new and refilled ink jet cartridges.
Refilled cartridges save consumers 40-65% compared to discount office supply
store prices for new cartridges.
One of the biggest problems encountered is when the print head clogs.
This happens in brand new cartridges too. This usually happens when the printer
has not been used for a while, or the cartridge has been exposed to the air
for too long. Many customers have come in with new cartridges saying that
they didn't last very long and in fact, they are still full of ink.
Users should familiarize themselves with their printer operating manual,
especially the section on print head maintenance. your print
head needs maintenance when your print looks like this:
. If it does then you have clogged print heads. If your colors are wrong
then you either have a clogged print head or you have run out of one of the
colors. The printer mixes the different inks to make the different colors.
So your yellow may be fine but your magenta may be missing a few nozzles.
you won't get white streaks through your picture but the color will be funky.
YOU NEED TO CLEAN YOUR PRINT HEAD.
Just about every printer comes with a utility that operates each nozzle one
at a time so you can see which nozzles are not working. Every printer also
has a cleaning routine. Some of these procedures can be operated from
the buttons on the machine, other manufacturers put these utilities in the
printer driver software they supply with the machine. For example my Xerox
Workcentre 450, Canon BJC250 and HP600C have the utilities in the printer
drivers. In Windows 95/98 you click on START/Settings/Printers, then
you right click on the printer, select PROPERTIES and then go to the appropriate
action.

Protecting Your E-mail Address
One of
the easiest ways to protect yourself online is to limit who you provide your
e-mail address to. When you are visiting a web site that asks you to sign
a guest book or log in, check out their privacy policy. There is usually
a link to this policy on the page where they ask you for your e-mail address.
Some Web Sites tell you that they will not sell or otherwise distribute your
address. You probably can trust them. Others don't mention it, and e-mail
addresses are a valuable commodity. It is very easy to send tens of thousands
of e-mails with a single click of the mouse. Warranty cards that ask your
e-mail are strictly collecting marketing information. So are those free magazines
you get.
One way
to protect yourself is to get a free e-mail account like Juno, Hotmail or
Yahoo. Keep your business or personal e-mail private and provide this "free"
address to vendors and suppliers. If you start getting too much junk at that
address, you can close up and move on by getting a new address.
One of
the biggest complaints I've heard about AOL is the preponderance of junk
e-mail. On AOL you can limit who you will accept mail from.
Most
e-mail programs allow you to set rules for processing mail. Pegasus Mail,
Outlook Express and others allow you to specify rules for mail sorting and
distribution based on all the key fields of the message like the SENDER field
the SUBJECT or the TO field. You could tell your friends to use a code
word or nickname in your address like this: "CustSvc <pts@iteinc.net>"
and you could set up the rule to see if the message is to CustSvc. In your
outgoing messages you would never put that part of the address so if someone
scarfed up your address somehow, your rule would process messages to your
junk pile.
The other
way to protect your address and your friends address(es) is to use BLIND CARBON
COPY (also known as BCC). It is easy, look in the help of your e-mail for
BCC.
If you
have any other questions about protecting your e-mail address call your friends
at PTS. We don't give out your address to anyone.
